Is it normal for the puppies of a nursing dog to have diarrhea if the mother has diarrhea?

the mother is eating a high quality dry kibble mixed with boiled pork, and sometimes boiled liver. The puppies are not vomiting and they are hydrated. The vet we went to see said it was normal to a point and to watch them for a couple days. has anyone encountered this before??

your vet probably knows best. The momma may have the poops from the liver if she is getting to much.

Pork’s full of fat. Bacon grease will do the same thing.

That’s why the mom has diarrhea! Get some puppy kibble for the mother, that’s what she should be eating.

    Liver will do the same.

None of them should have diarrhea.

she should be on a high quality puppyfood….i feed mine 3 cans of puppyfood a day and give her dry food 24/7..it’s not normal but it could be the liver..liver will give a dog diarrhea…i would just keep her on dogfood and puppyfood and stop the boiled pork and liver..i never give my dogs pork or liver feeding pups..

Some vets believe this, but I can tell you pups can deydrate in a matter of hours.

I’ve done a couple of different things with litters with diarrhea

    1) make sure mom and pups are wormed. I use nemex-2, recommeded by my vet and not a perscription — you can buy off the internet at KV Vet supply and others. Save for 2 week old babies.

    2) I’ve given the paste form of the aspergillus (the good bacteria in yogurt). You can get in a tube and put a bit in their mouths — you don’t give the puppies age but I’ve given it to young pups.

    3) Kaopectate. Yes, the regular, origional form of the stuff for people. Dose according to weight. This does work wonders. A physician/dog breeder had me do this to a litter that didn’t respond to #2, and life was good, quickly!

It may be what mom is eating. I would cut out the pork & see if it helps. Have mom & pups been wormed? This is also important. If no, i’d worm them. If they have been wormed, they may have cocicia (not sure on the spelling). It is very common & can be cured with meds from the vet. I get the meds & treat mom & pups to prevent it. Hope this helps some. 🙂
